A race of beings living underground, seemingly related to Hrules, a pack animal. They also encounter deadly animals and a giant predatory bird called a Zrax, and other creatures thought to be long dead. Their journey takes them to a mountain top to search for a device that might save their dying world. If, they survive the cold winter and the betrayal of a man named Yanest.
